How does skepticism and cynicism take hold of us?
In a sermon on “Good and Evil” (from his “Life is Worth Living” series), Archbishop and theologian Fulton J. Sheen, explains that no one starts out an atheist, no one starts out a skeptic:
“That is to say, one who doubts the possibility of ever discovering truth. These attitudes are made. And they are made less by the way one thinks than by the way one lives. We do not live as we think. We soon begin to think as we live. We suit our philosophy to our actions. That is bad.”
Children are born believers, not skeptics. They trust. They have faith. They know what magic is. They have courage. They love nature. They believe in the invisible. Their hearts are open.
People who are cynical can be misled, steered in the wrong direction, manipulated, exploited, lied to, brainwashed, hardened.
They settle.
True love does not allow this to happen. But it must be fought for and protected. And it must be a priority. A source of strength.
