A wise older friend wrote me the following email tonight:

“People will come into your life and leave it as they please. But some will stay. Those who have your best interests at heart will stay by your side no matter how difficult it may get. They will know your worth and protect it and cherish it at all costs. True love and deep connection is so rare—almost nonexistent now. You’re lucky if it happens once in your lifetime. It’s tough to find someone who is prepared to give you everything you deserve in life. Truly genuine people know that. Everyone has their day of reckoning. You live your life with passion and emotional courage. I know it doesn’t seem like that matters anymore, but it still does to the right people, the right person. Remember what James Baldwin wrote: Perhaps he was a fool and a coward but almost everybody is one or the other and most people are both…The moment we break faith with one another, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out.”
