Cate Blanchett’s composer in Tar (2022) destroys Woke identity politics, but she needs to be cast as a “villain” in order to do so. What is so revealing is that the male student is disgusted by great “cis white male” composers like Bach, yet has no problem calling his female teacher a “fucking bitch” in the classroom (something he should be expelled for) when she dares to challenge his views, as any good teacher should (teacher and student sitting together at the piano reminds me of Isabelle Huppert and Benoit Magimel in Michael Haneke’s The Piano Teacher. How does one teach a student? Is it possible if they do not believe they have anything to learn?). Imagine him saying something this disrespectful and disparaging about any other group but women. No one would dare. Isn’t it “hate speech?” Fucking bitch.
The new iteration of cancel culture and Woke capitalism is speaking your mind and fighting for your rights, PRIVATELY, something I have done all my life very well. I wouldn’t be anywhere without it. It’s called sticking up for yourself. But when the aggressor becomes the unimpeachable victim—when a “cis” male student (or does he get a pass here because he conveniently doesn’t identify as male? All the better to be a misogynist with) complaining about the automatically cancellable power and privilege of “cis white men” but then calls his female teacher a fucking bitch in front of the entire class for challenging his ideas—which is the job of the teacher, of good pedagogy, of THINKING—then what? What justice can there be?
No one is thinking anymore. No one has even begun to think, save for a brave few who have been doing it all along. The rest, as a friend told me in an email recently, are just pretending.
Speaking of artists and albums inspired by cis white men, in this case Bach again, here is a great one made by a woman using a computer centuries later.
