“The feel of unease is there right from the start and not necessarily due to the supernatural content: the thermographic tech used during the early police interrogation scene gives the impression of a city under constant surveillance.”

Everyone should watch Wolfen (1981). It tracks so much about who and what runs this world.

Below are some examples of the film’s fascinating (and constant) mysterious symbolism. A mix of technological surveillance (something hidden) and the occult (something hidden). Are the two really things really that different?

One is a power we cannot see but is everywhere, in all things. The other is a power we cannot see but is everywhere, in all things.

Wolfen’s “The devil on one shoulder. An angel on the other,” uttered by Albert Finney’s cop in a burned down church in 1980 Bronx reminds me of this scene from Dario Argento’s Inferno, made around the same time. The line is whispered and heard in the Biblioteca Filosofica. Code for hidden knowledge. This Biblioteca Filosofica happens to reside over basement (a medieval alchemist’s lab; a witches den?) full of fire and boiling cauldrons.
