I have been watching civilian footage of 9/11 on YouTube the past 10 days. It just happened, or the algorithm led me there. Not sure why—I wasn’t looking for it. Apart from a few brief news clips on TV, when the attacks first happened in 2001, I had never watched any footage of 9/11 before. I grew up two blocks away from the Twin Towers and always had a fascination with the buildings. When I was little, my mother used to joke that the buildings were so scary and imposing they would inevitably fall down one day. I’ve written a number of essays about the Twin Towers and have taken hundreds of screenshots every time they appear in a movie (I’ve always wanted to publish a book of these). Thankfully, I was living in London when the attacks happened. My parents were living Upstate. A number of people in my neighborhood, who lived in Tribeca through and post-911, died of lung cancer.
The civilian footage is very intense and eerie to watch, for many reasons. 2001 was a different world. People were a different world. Seeing the footage now is more unbelievable than it was seeing it then.
“Can we get control of an individual to the point where he will do our bidding against his will and even against fundamental laws of nature such as self preservation?

“Cell phone cameras were not widespread so people were wary of being photographed (even on a normal day) but obviously most people were distracted and things were not ‘as usual’. The scene at 2:42 sums up NYC to those who aren't from there - a white guy in a business suit talking to two black guys, one in street basketball jersey and an Asian guy nearby (everyone was watching T.V.'s in store windows together because cell phones didn't have screens). Scenes like this happen everyday in NYC....but especially on Sept 11th, the City was ONE. Everybody had everyone's back even though everyone seems to themselves. I saw many instances of people helping one another.”

If nothing else, Building 7 should tell us everything.
Here the BBC was reporting on the collapse of Building 7 while it was still standing.
